The aim of this this course is to equip you with the competencies that enable you to understand, explain and make a compelling case for information management and modelling in the built environment. You will become skilled as an advocate for building information management and modelling by drawing on the ideas and concepts that underpin it, and practiced at embedding the principles through pre-qualification and expressions of interest project activities.
Successful learners will be able to:
- Articulate the background and reasons for information management and modelling
- Justify the adoption of information management and modelling to support organisational and asset management strategies
- Outline the technical concepts and challenges of information management and modelling
The course is one of four that, in combination, cover the buildingSMART Foundation certification curriculum and competencies that address the concepts and benefits associated with information management and modelling. It serves as essential preparation for practitioners seeking buildingSMART Foundation accreditation through their examination (which is not included in this course).
This course will award you with 10 credits from the University of Nottingham Online. In order to successfully complete this course, you are expected to:
- Engage in approximately 7 hours a week of activity including directed, independent and interactive learning, as well as time to complete course tasks. This takes place over a period of 12 weeks.
- Work through the activities to sharpen your knowledge and understanding of the topic.
- Complete the following development tasks that will be assessed by the course tutor:
1) A written response to a pre-qualification document detailing why and how a supplier would integrate building information management and modelling.

Sarah Davidson
Professor of Information Management at The University of Nottingham
Sarah Davidson is a Professor of Information Management in the Department of Architecture and Built Environment. Sarah teaches into all levels of the Architecture Programmes as well as the department's programmes for Environmental Engineering at the University of Nottingham.
Sarah is a Fellow member of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS). She has spent a significant period in the construction industry working for both consultant organisations and contracting bodies.
Sarah also works with industry bodies and clients to embed building information management and modelling and the principles of the UK BIM Framework into business as usual. She has been a frequent speaker at industry conferences and is a member of the nima Facilitation Team who are engaged in the development and adoption of the standards and guidance within the UK BIM Framework. Sarah's particular areas of interest are around data security, data classification for beneficial flow and application and collaborative/co-operative team working.
Prior to joining the University of Nottingham Sarah spent 11 fantastic years with the international construction consultant Gleeds. She became a senior director and Head of Research and Development - an initiative which ultimately provided the platform for their digital transformation.
Sarah is a part of the Architecture, Culture and Tectonics (ACT) Research Group and her key areas of expertise include:
